#natyamnaatak – “But At Least You Can Floss Your Teeth”

Just because you’re an experienced Bharatanatyam artist and teacher doesn’t mean you’re a good dancer.

Years ago, some students came bouncing into class with a new dance move, “Flossing.” After some demos for each other, the inevitable question comes.

Student 1 – “Suchi akka! Have you tried this dance move? It’s so cool.”

Teacher – “Thanks, but I think I’ll pass… I’ll just enjoy watching all of you try.”

However, resistance was futile. About 60 seconds later… students attempt to keep a straight face as I flail at Flossing.

Student 1 – “Suchi akka, it’s ok. You always tell us to keep trying, and we’ll get it.”

Student 2 – “You might get it someday, but I’m not so sure. You are kind of old.”

Teacher – #mindvoice “Ouch.”

Student 3 – “Don’t worry, Suchi akka. You’re so good at Bharatanatyam, it doesn’t matter you can’t do this.”

Student 1 – “Yeah, you might not be able to dance flossing, but at least you can floss your teeth.”

Teacher – “Ummmmm….” #mindvoice “Ummmmmm…..”
