Students were learning a difficult new movement, and were getting a little discouraged. The movement requires repeatedly going up and down to the knees and back up. It takes strength, balance and concentration.
It was time for a little pep talk. And some high philosophy.
Teacher – “I know this is hard. But just like other things you have learned, you will get this with repetition and practice.”
Student 1 – “Yeah, but we’ve never had to keep falling down and getting up before. Who thought this was a good idea.”
Teacher – “There is an old Japanese saying, ‘Fall down 7 times, get up 8.’ What does that mean to you.”
Student 2 – “I guess it means that we should keep on trying.”
One week passes, and students are back in class.
Teacher – “So how is it going.”
Student 3 – “Definitely better, at least I can get up again.”
Student 1 – “My knees still hurt, but not as much.”
Student 2 – “I think I even like this step now. That saying really works!”
Student 4 – “Yeah, that Japanese guy really knew what he was talking about.” Teacher – #mindvoice “Yes, yes indeed.”

Just another day in class, and I’m challenging the young students with a sequence of steps. We mix and match the order to test memory and do it without breaks to challenge stamina, and make it a little game.
Nothing too crazy. Or so I think.
Student 1 – “Wow this is pretty mean.”
Teacher – “Mean? What do you mean, ‘mean’?”
Student 1 – “I mean, this is mean because you aren’t giving us any breaks!”
Teacher – “You know…”
Student 1 – “Well, I guess you’re not THAT mean. I mean, you aren’t as mean as the mean school teacher in ‘Matilda,’ Miss Trunchbull.”
Teacher – “Ummmmm, thanks?”
#mindvoice “Wow, you have really arrived. You aren’t as mean as an adult bully in a Roald Dahl story.”

Young students are learning some new steps, starting with the rhythmic pattern, then footwork.
Teacher – “This new adavu (step) has something new, can you tell what it is?” Student 1 – “Why do you stop in the middle like that?” Teacher – “I’m not stopping, I am pausing. We call this pause ‘kaarvai’.” Student 2 – “‘Kaarvai’ – does that mean we stop dancing?” Teacher – “No it just means that we stay silent with our bodies for just a moment. Just like we aren’t saying anything with our mouths, our bodies should be still during the ‘kaarvai’.” Student 3 – “Still and silent, that never happens in my school.” Student 4 – “Mine either, especially at lunchtime in the cafeteria.” Student 1 – “Yeah, I think my whole school needs a kaarvai at lunchtime too.” Teacher – #mindvoice “I’m pretty sure your teachers would agree.”
You only get to celebrate a 20th anniversary once.
Twenty years is long enough to have a clear history and track record. It’s long enough to see an evolution. It’s short enough to have a lot of growth and progression ahead.
It’s the perfect amount of time to have traveled, have clarity on where you want to go, and know-how on how to get there.
As Kala Vandanam’s 20th year comes to a close, I reflected deeply on the memories. It was overwhelming.
Rather than list specific memories, here are 20 experiences over 20 years that have had a lasting impact.
Beauty of Aspiration – Seeing students admire their seniors when they are young, and grow into seniors for the next generation to look up to
Creating Beauty – Crafting an aesthetic space that makes you want to dance, and creating beauty through art
Creation of Community – In class, outside of class, everywhere – caring for each other’s well-being and success
Deep Stretch of Growth – Growing in creativity, challenge and quality with every new work
Dichotomy – Students experiencing the dynamic duo of excitement and nervousness before going on stage
Endless Series of Sprints – Each class or rehearsal is a sprint, learning new and trying to perfect the old.
Evolution of Confidence – Big nerves before small shows became small nerves before big shows
Feel of Arrival – Hearing your teacher congratulate you as a teacher for the 1st time
Having Fun – Creating new games in class, including the student-inspired “Suchi Akka Says”
Joys of Surprise – Yelps of surprise when students see themselves with full stage makeup for the 1st time, and don’t recognize who’s in the mirror
Joy of Sharing – Watching students teach their parents and spouses about the art they love
Marathon of Hard Work – This journey is hard, even for the naturally talented. We live the adage “overnight success YEARS in the making.”
Opening Doors – Spreading the joy of art and the rich heritage of India with audiences
Opening Eyes – Watching friends get to know us in a completely different way, through the lens of our art
Overcoming Fear – Watching students overcome years of stage fright and take the stage as soloists
Reflection for Growth – Post-performance individual and group reflections as a meaningful ritual
Sense of Acceptance – Understanding where you were and where you are, to get where you want to go
Sense of Pride – Watching students you have groomed take pride in their role of grooming others
Steadfast Values – Pursue excellence, do the work, lift others as you lift yourself
Winds Beneath Wings – Students developing deep and lasting relationships, realizing that dance friends know your truest, sweetest and sweatiest self
We have immense Gratitude for all that has been good, all that has not gone according to plan, all the people that have been a part of the journey.
Each has contributed to this journey of:
Giving and receiving
Learning and growth
Struggle and success
THANK YOU for the gifts you have shared, your positive energy and good wishes going forward. We look ahead to years filled with experiences that stretch our imaginations and give us endless joy.

The promise of a new calendar year… warm wishes to you from the entire @kalavandanam family ❤️
We started the year with a “New Year Natyamela” – a nice sweaty adavu class and a round of Bharatanatyam Bingo (maybe the longest round of bingo ever? 😂 ) What better way to start the year than with natyam!

Toward the end of each year, I ask students to do a reflection of their past year of learning, and set a few goals or intentions for the year to come.
Student – “Is it OK if we have some goals that are secret from you?”
Teacher – “Of course it is, but I’m curious about why you need to keep secrets?”
Student – “Well, it’s more of a surprise goal than a secret one.”
Teacher – “Oh? Who is it a surprise for?”
Student – “Well, both of us.My goal is to practice every day. It would be a surprise for you that I wrote it, and a surprise for me if I did it! SURPRISE!”
Teacher – #mindvoice “Now that is a surprise we could all love.”
As much affection as students show, they are equally (maybe more) willing to identify all of a teacher’s flaws. My students are no exception – for example…
(When mixing and matching movements to help them become more mentally and physically agile) – “You are nice… but sneaky.”
(When making them do tough adavus that make them sweat) – “You are evil… but in a nice way.”
(When showing them a technique sequence that is challenging) – “How do you move that fast when you are so old.” (particularly #ouch)
(When I’ve given corrections and ask them to do something “one more time”) – “I don’t think you had a good kindergarten teacher. You said ‘one more time’ ten times ago!”
And maybe the best one so far….
(When I had a brief menopausal dizzy spell, and nearly hit the deck during class) – “Aren’t you supposed to be more graceful?”
