Starstruck, Inspired, and Forever Changed by a Woman I Never Knew
By Suchitra Sairam
How can someone you’ve never studied with or worked with (or even met) shape your ideals so deeply?
Over the weekend, legendary Indian artist and teacher Sharada Hoffman of Kalakshetra (affectionately called Sharada Teacher) passed away at age 96. Her departure created a pause.
And a moment to reflect on a life incredibly well lived.
My first glimpse of her was through the 1984 BBC documentary on the famed Chennai, India arts institution, Kalakshetra. I first watched it in 1988 on a grainy VHS recording. I must have watched it 1000 times after that. I memorized her words, noted her impeccable dress and posture, observed her character in her interactions with her legendary guru and her students alike.
Even through a screen, her integrity, dignity, and precision were unforgettable.
Years later, in the late 1990s, I attended a performance at Kalakshetra. When Sharada Teacher was brought on stage to be honored.
I saw her from a distance, and was starstruck by this tiny woman who clearly packed a punch.
And then there are the stories.
I’ve heard them from my teachers and artists I admire, across generations, who had the privilege of learning from Sharada Teacher. The astonishing thing? They are always the same.
Over decades of work and service, she was unwaveringly consistent. Disciplined, uncompromising, generous, dignified. She respected art, nature, and people with equal devotion.
I’m inspired…
💫 by her service to the arts, her guru, and her students
💫 by her willingness to step aside so others could shine
💫 by her refusal to compromise on excellence, no matter who stood before her
I never “knew” her. And yet, I feel like I do in a personal way.
Her consistency, generosity, integrity, and dignity inspire me to get the best from myself to help others.
Her life reminds me influence doesn’t always require proximity. Sometimes it travels through stories, through legacies, through the example of a life lived with integrity.
Who is someone you’ve never known, but who has deeply influenced you?
