
Kala Vandanam is pleased to bring an exciting, holistic, intensive learning experience to Bharatanatyam students and teachers in Minnesota. Join us for Natya Gurukulam 2018, a weeklong residential camp to explore Bharatanatyam and allied arts to enrich your understanding and develop new skills alongside others, to take their personal artistic journey forward.

Natya Gurukulam 2018 gives attendees the rare opportunity to completely immerse themselves in the arts without the distractions of everyday life, including access to electronic devices. This will be a transformative experience for the mind, body and artistic soul. Natya Gurukulam 2018 will be conducted at scenic Koinonia Retreat Center situated in the wooded, rolling hills near Lake Sylvia in South Haven, MN. Attendees will have shared rooms in the Retreat Lodge, vegetarian meals and snacks, and access to a beautiful natural setting including a large outdoor labyrinth and wooded trails teeming with wildlife.
Natya Gurukulam 2018 is open only to residents of Minnesota, age 12 and up (age 12 as of July 1, 2018). There will be up to three groups, 1) teen and adult beginners, 2) intermediate and 3) advanced. Each attendee will have the opportunity to work with each of the master instructors. The master instructors will determine group assignments for each attendee (not self-selection), based on a pre-camp video submission. LIMITED ENROLLMENT. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED FOR THE ENTIRE CAMP.
General framework for levels: 1) Beginners – those who have limited background, or are learning adavus and beginner pieces, 2) Intermediate – have learned repertoire pieces such as Jathiswaram, Shabdam, Keerthanam, Thillana 3) Advanced – those who have learned for more than 8 years, have a solid foundation in technique, have learned multiple maargams or advanced repertoire such as varnams, padams, javalis, ashtapadis, and are fast learners.
